Tillamook city and Tillamook factory
Do you know about city that has a factory that produces cheese and ice cream, can you guess? If you guessed Tillamook, you are correct. In this story I am going to tell you about the city of Tillamook as well as the factory Tillamook creamery.
Tillamook is home to over 5,634 people and it is the 77th largest city in Oregon. It has lots of farms because there is a factory called Tillamook creamery and since it produces lots of cheese and ice cream yogurt sour cream and butter the factory needs a lot of milk and the milk comes from the farms in Tillamook. Fun fact about Tillamook is that it was named after a native American tribe Tillamook and there was a language called Tillamook.
Now we are moving on to the factory Tillamook, built in 1949 Tillamook creamery is over 114 years old and it is a popular tourist attraction in Oregon. Ok now let's pour out Tillamook creamery's history with a pinch of how cheese is made. In 1909 farmers build a ship called the morning star to deliver milk to the factory to be made into cheese and other dairy products. They built the ship because there were mountains between the farms and Tillamook factory and the only way to get to Tillamook from the farms was by water, so it was easier to transport milk to the factory.
Now we dive in how cheese is made to make Tillamook medium cheddar, Tillamook sharp cheddar and Tillamook extra sharp cheddar. There is a lot of process the needs to be done. First 53k lbs of milk (raw) comes into the cooking vat to be stirred, next they go through the cheddar master. The cheddar master separates the curd that came from the cooking vat and drain's the curd to the cheddaring process. The curd goes through a machine that drains all the moisture out of the curd and a pipe sprays the curd with salt. Then another pipe vacuums the curd up and drops it in a tower shaped like cylinder. The curd fills up and then sets. Then a knife in the tower cuts the cheddar curd into blocks and then a platform pushes them out into a bag. They are then put in a box and are sent to the storage room to be aged. For medium cheddar it is 60 days, for sharp cheddar it is 9 months and for extra sharp cheddar it is 15 months. They are kept at 55 degrees. After they have aged, they go through a sensory machine which senses if each cheese block is ready to be wrapped and sent to store. If not, they are again sent to the storage room to be aged.
In conclusion Tillamook cheese factory is an awesome place to visit. Also, if you ever see Tillamook's logo, that is the morning star ship that delivered the milk to Tillamook factory.
the end.
